Hold on to my heart
"Hands down my favourite song on Closing Time, this is the loose story of my ancestor, Heinrich Trimper, who arrived in Canada as a Waldecian mercenary for the British army during the American Revolution, and settled in southwest part of Nova Scotia: some artistic license has been taken, particularly in the final verse, which does not have Heinrich's unfortunate fictional counterpart surviving the experience.
This song started as a Mumford & Sons pastiche, but in the studio, my interest in Celtic music and hard rock took over and the song headed for Big Country territory. Thanks to my buddy Maan Hani and the inimitable Doug Scurfield who played twin drums on this track, but had no idea where the song was going to go next..."

And as a "single":
They shipped us out in the spring of '83
Sent off to fight with some unseen enemy
This land is not my home, but the pay is fine
"Come back in one piece", they said, and this land will be mine
So hold on, hold on, hold on to my heart
I'll be back for it someday
Hold on, hold on, hold on to my heart
I'll be back for it someday
Don't cry for me, 'cause your tears will be wasted
I wont kiss you goodbye so I won't remember how it tasted
I had a dream where I was awash in blood
From all of the hearts I'd pierced and the throats I'd cut
Bodies lined up along the coast as far as I could see
As I wandered closer, all the corpses looked like me
So hold on, hold on, hold on to my heart
I'll be back for it someday
Hold on, hold on, hold on to my heart
I'll be back for it someday
Don't cry for me, 'cause your tears will be wasted
I wont kiss you goodbye so I won't remember how it tasted
There's something sinister waiting in those trees
Something frightens me: I go weak at the knees
The sound of a musket shot and I hit the ground
All these years of fighting and this is how I go down?
So hold on, hold on, hold on to my heart
I'll be back for it someday
Hold on, hold on, hold on to my heart
I'll be back for it someday
Don't cry for me, 'cause your tears will be wasted
I wont kiss you goodbye so I won't remember how it tasted…
