The Deluge
"'The Deluge' was intended to be a sort of practical joke on Closing Time: my buddy Maan and I were recording drums for several songs on the album, and l got the idea that rather than launching straight into "Tara", it would be fun to start out with an atmospheric, Vangelis-style intro to make prospective listeners say, "What the heck is this?" Maan laid down some crazy drum-banging, having no idea what I had in mind: I went home and recorded some outside sounds, as well as playing around with a detuned autoharp and piano, and there you have it.
The practical joke back-fired, however, as I found out once I spoke to a few people after Closing Time was released: most listeners were really digging the trippy ambient piece and were a bit disappointed at how conventional the rest of the album was. I suppose it was worth a try..."
